Two weeks prior I thought it would be cool to hand carve some custom lettering work; two days before the show and three days into a five-day wood gouging session I began to have my doubts. What originally was to be an exercise in precision wood chiseling, quickly turned into a multiple day ordeal of semi-controlled gouging — to the point where it left a very visible bruise on my palm, and I lost feeling in my thumb and forefinger (and only very recently regained the feeling almost 2 months later). Ah, how we suffer for our craft.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-7847038694866177832009-12-25T09:29:00.000-10:002011-03-28T17:46:28.254-10:00No. 36: Realistic computer animated filmsexhibit unrealistic expectations

Recently I had an opportunity to rewatch Pixar's Cars. And while it was a reminder of how high they set the bar for storytelling and intelligent writing, I was struck by their very liberal and deft use of typography to set the stage. Thanks largely to an over-zealous art director and design team, their movies display unparalleled sophistication and comprehension of the history of design, both in a formal and vernacular sense, and even their bumper stickers — with their authentically inappropriate type choices — are perfectly kerned. Too bad such attention to detail doesn't yet exist in the real world. Normally when I shoot something for the Type-O series, the set up is a no-brainer. I shot and reshot this picture, while waiting for the bus, trying to find the most complimentary angle. This was the best I came up with. Sigh. Seriously guys, a pole in the middle of a sign? Suda had me delightfully on my hands and knees, trying to guess where the next hidden surprise would be – but in hindsight, I think I was already mentally prepared for his show. After all, most of the stuff I capture for the Type-O series is fairly invisible, but generally only after years of neglect. These two examples take the cake: virtually hidden since day one along the roofline of their respective structures, and tiny, to boot. I wonder if Armstrong and Winston ever predicted their names would fall by the wayside, into the forgotten annals of Honolulu's history?

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-72716618818461055132009-10-20T08:32:00.001-10:002011-06-28T21:58:34.077-10:00No. 32. Jukeboxes blared from Bill Lederer's bar, the Two Jacks, the Mint, the New Emma Cafe." And it probably also blared from Smith's Union Bar, a local watering hole that has remained a dive since its inception in 1935. Its exterior and antiquated gold foil lettering stand in sharp contrast to the "street modern" look of its more recent neighbors, and recalls an older, seedier time, a time that still echoes in the First Friday bar scene — certainly a testament to the enduring infamy of Hotel Street.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-75213200094242999442009-10-17T22:22:00.000-10:002011-03-28T13:59:18.026-10:00Tribute to the Masters.

TRIBUTE TO THE MASTERS
Framed & Mounted Digital Print (2009), $20.00

This piece was an experiment in defining the essence of letters through the suggestion of its forms. The letters themselves, are incomplete; but by juxtaposing positive and negative spaces, seemingly arbitrarily adding and subtracting shadows, and projecting illusion of a three dimensional space, all elements work to pose the questions: What defines a letter? What defines the space it occupies? Also, it is a tribute to the masters of classic Italian bicycle framebuilding; the letters' forms taking visual cues from frame lugs and lug cutouts.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-23947180498843403372009-10-15T08:13:00.000-10:002011-03-28T17:47:47.206-10:00No. 31. Well, Burl, we may not be looking a whole lot at the building, but its bold red sign with white hand-painted letters is mighty appealing. Red, according to the Chinese, is the color of happiness and celebration, and with its matching red canvas sun shades adorning the sidewalk produce stands - what's not to like? It's a gorgeous piece of work, and atypical of many old buildings in Chinatown and about Honolulu that fall into disrepair and neglect, someone has seen it fit to keep this specimen in tip top shape. And we're all the happier for it.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-71182237565368366192009-10-12T08:32:00.000-10:002011-03-28T17:47:56.355-10:00No. 30. This example is as plain as can be, but as Robert Bringhurst writes in The Elements of Typographic Style: "Once the demands of legibility and logical order are satisfied, evenness of color is the typographer's normal aim." Often, type varies in width and negative space, and although large blocks of reading text have consistent color, with display letters, such as titles, headers, signs, the inconsistencies become more obvious. Designers are often guilty of such oversight. Not so in this case: I cannot speculate whether the font came as such or if its designer modified it, but the negative space within the letters and between the letters are balanced, beautiful, restrained, and subtle. It doesn't get more perfect than this.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3013769220941177103.post-26481647731775502812009-08-01T18:34:00.000-10:002011-03-28T17:48:03.116-10:00No. 29. There's nothing really spectacular about it, aside from the fact that it's a white wood board with handpainted letters. But it's the handpainted letters that really make this special. Ever see those newer, light-box signs with vinyl adhesive letters? They're cut using a machine similar to a plotter that use a computer vector file as a guide. And despite that, it still looks cheap and they lose their luster quickly. By contrast, his one has gotta be at least 20 years old and even though it's a bit faded, it still looks pretty freakin' rad.

Evil Geniushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06673375640587128956noreply@blogger.com0
